Guide To Building A Concrete Slab
June 19, 2011 Posted by admin
More commonly used for making walkways, patios or foundation for a structure, concrete slabs are getting popular as an additional option for improving the beauty and durability of an area. With a good walkway, there will be no need to muddle through rain puddles or muddy areas. It is absolutely reasonable to design a slab that has a quality of not only being functional but also blends in the garden or porch. This simple article explains the basic steps to build a concrete slab and it is not only easy but needs a minimum cost to complete.
There are few things to consider like level and smoothness which is very important if it is the foundation for the house. The plan has to be well made and it must be ensured that everything is prepared for carrying out this project. The last thing required is to patch or trench the foundation. It is a boring and tiresome work when the needs of plumbing and electric means are not considered.
Before pouring cement on an area to set the foundation, the size and the location has to be determined that is to be occupied by the slab. For easy referencing, the stakes should be positioned for marking the boundaries. Any necessary adjustments can be made to the design as it is planned. Next, the area of vegetation has to be cleared. Few inches of the topsoil can also be removed and the dirt should be leveled to form a shallow hole. Some local authorities can also require to a vapor barrier below the dirt. This has to be confirmed with the local building authority. For setting the base for the slab, gravel should be spread over the hole. Steel mesh should also be laid. They are to be wired at the intersections with the help of pliers. This will strengthen the foundation where pressure is the highest.
Next, a form has to be used to keep the concrete well in position during finishing process. The string line will ensure that the form is square. For giving additional stability, they have to be nailed together. The slab level is supposed to be balanced in every direction. The sides of the form may be adjusted for accurately balancing the design. A cement mixer will work best for evenly mixing the materials that are required for the foundation. When cement is being poured, the shovel has to be made ready for evenly layering the cement. A ‘push and pull’ sawing motion can be used to layer the cement. It should be given time to dry. Anything heavy should be kept away from the area and it may take almost five days for a driveway.
The discussed steps and tips are the basics for building a concrete slab. A careful and successful builder will consider all the matters for ensuring the safety of the building’s occupants. In this matter, extra measures have to be taken for ensuring the stability of the concrete slab.
Elements of a Good Business Letter
June 12, 2011 Posted by admin
The essentials which go to make up a good business letter may be divided into two classes – mechanical make-up, and contents. Before a letter can come into existence the mechanical side must be attended to. The subject matter may be pertinent and well composed and yet the letter itself be so arranged typo-graphically and so disposed on the page that the unity of the whole is lost.
The display as a whole should balance. Before the stenographer starts the address, calculation should be made as to how many lines the letter will run and as to how it should be disposed on the page. The body of the letter should neither be crowded near the top nor bottom of the sheet, but should be so placed that, viewed in connection with the letter head, it presents a well balanced and artistic effect.
This effect is often underrated, being in fact passed by without a thought by the average stenographer, and the ordinary business man is so busy seeing that his dictation is correctly transcribed that he gives little thought to this essential. Harmony of color effect should be observed. A yellow paper bearing the firm announcement in blue, the letter in green and signed with purple ink is not to be recommended.
Letters blurred in copying and wet from the press or otherwise violating the rule of neatness cannot help but produce an unfavorable impression. Orthography and capitalization, particularly of proper names, should be exact and uniform.
A misspelled word in the body of a letter, particularly if a mere transposition of letters in typewriting, may occasionally slip in and do no particular damage, but the misspelling of the name of the party addressed may lose an order, and cannot help but militate against the general effect of the letter. Neatness uncompromising neatness – that should be the first effect of a letter, giving the idea that the firm putting out the writing is thorough master of the minor (as well as the major) details of its business.
Contents
In letter-writing, contents may be divided into subject matter and expression. The subject matter is, broadly speaking, what the writer says. This should coincide with two other things:
(1) what the writer wants to say, and
(2) what the one addressed wants to know.
Something which is the a b c of life and a mere matter of routine to the writer in a certain line may be abstruse and complicated to a non-technical reader. To avoid an offensive simplicity of language on the one hand and excessive technicality on the other is one of the tests of a good business correspondent. There is a tendency to slight simple questions asked by different inquirers day after day, which must be avoided by putting oneself in the place of the one asking the question, and giving the knowledge for which he is looking.
One of the most, if not the most, important essentials of a good business letter lies in correct expression. The one thing which causes more failures in business correspondence than any other, is the incorporation of personal peculiarities in a letter. There may be called to mind, in fact, more than one established business backed by ample capital, having a broad field and financed by capable and conservative business men, that is at the mercy of a poor correspondent. This is ably expressed by Forrest Crissy, who says:
“So apparent must be the importance of this branch (tact and tone in business letters) of business systematization, that scarcely a word of argument is needed to enforce its necessity. Very recently a large whole-sale merchant said to me:
‘I have recently been obliged to discharge the head of my credit department – my confidential man. He is honest, conservative and shrewd, but recently I have been awakened to the fact that his incapacity to write a letter which does not leave a sting, a chill, or at least a sense of lofty indifference, is hurting my business more than would some downright reckless blunders. When he writes a letter granting a good customer a larger line of credit he gives it a twist that somehow makes that customer wish he hadn’t asked for credit and thus placed himself under added obligations. And if he refuses to meet the request for such a favor the refusal is so put that it seems a studied effort to conceal a strong unwillingness to give any credit at all.
Yet this man has always considered him-self an adept in letter-writing – and for a time he completely hypnotized me into that view. But at last the steady withdrawal of patronage and the occasional out-spoken retorts which his letters provoked forced upon me a recognition of the real condition of affairs. Then I went out after a man who could write a business letter that had just the right ring to it; that was neither so sloppy that it sounded hypocritical or so stiff and stilted that there was no tone of good hearty business friendliness in it.
I have found him. He comes high, but the difference in results is remarkable. Of course, there are other things required than this form of literary ability – that’s what you’d call it. He must have business experience, business judgment and all the other cardinal business virtues; but the addition of this peculiar capacity to write business letters that hit the mark is a rare gift and makes him a star man.’ “
Simplicity and clearness as an element of expression cannot be rated too highly. The saying of a thing in the plain language of the common people, not only adds to the style and dignity of a letter, but has the most vital element of being understandable. As Chas. R. Weirs says, “Eloquence, either real or imaginary, has no place in a business letter.”
Whatever else may be neglected in writing, courtesy should not be slighted. A man may be told nearly anything face to face – it is qualified by the bearing, tone of voice, manner and earnestness of the speaker. A sentence may be given an entirely different meaning by a tone or gesture – it may even be diplomatically changed after partly spoken, to make it conform to the unconscious demand of the listener, and most of all spoken speech is transient. What is written, on the other hand, is put down in black and white to stay. The record is permanent. It can be offered in evidence, can be dug up years afterwards from a musty file, and discourteously written can queer, not only an immediate sale, but the sales of a decade.
Length
Letters often tend to verbosity from the fact that they are dictated instead of written. Were a man to write his letters himself with pen and ink he would study brevity and conciseness of expression, but having letters written for him, he will dictate more than he would write. Brevity is not always desirable. Some people – particularly those receiving few letters – like to receive lengthy correspondence. Getting few letters, they wish those long and newsy.
A letter is an event to some patrons and cannot be too long for a careful perusal. In this class of letters the party ad-dressed may be often appealed to in conversational style; as, “Judge of the goods yourself, Mr. Brown,” “We ask you, Mr. Smith, if we have not treated you fairly?” etc. At the other extreme is the business man, particularly the city business man. To him, brevity to the point of curtness is always welcome. As someone has alliteratively said, the formula for a business letter to a busy man is: Sir: Say it. Stop!
Judging the Other Man’s Letter.
One of the pre-requisites of a good correspondent is the ability, inherent or acquired to judge the general character and status of the writer by means of his letters. Until the last few years the letter-head of a firm was a considerable guide to the standing of the company putting It out, but good printing is now much more common and many one-horse concerns put out conservative, well-gotten-up stationery.
Ability to recognize the efforts of an amateur or schoolboy inquiring for a catalog with no intention of buying and to treat the writer accordingly, call for almost occult powers. The president of one of the large machinery companies putting out a cement mixer selling at 0.00, relates that one of the company travelers visited Detroit in response to an apparently good lead and found a twelve-year-old boy wanted a dozen cement mixers “to go into the mail-order business with.”
Some companies putting out expensive catalogs write a letter asking a doubtful inquirer to fill out an information blank before sending a catalog. The correct interpretation of the personality of a writer means the saving of dollars of expenditure as well as the ability to write him correctly. In a fire insurance concern employing hundreds of agents it would be easy for a manager to inform himself through his special agents as to each agent’s nationality, education, experience in the business, etc., and vary his correspondence accordingly, while a mail order house might have no means of judging a man but by his bare letter.
Form Letters
A form letter is one of a series of letters, to be sent on similar occasions. Such letters are usually in imitation typewriting with blanks left for the name of the party addressed, and when carefully executed are a close imitation of a typewritten letter. Form letters vary from those not to be distinguished from actual typewriting, to the stock letters of collection agencies, in which no attempt is made to imitate the machine. Some writers use a number of short forms or inserts which they use in dictating to avoid a repetition of dictation.
Letters of Recommendation
The promiscuous writing of letters of recommendation has done much to cheapen the effect of recommends. Many firms refuse such letters entirely. Perhaps the best plan is to have an employee, when leaving, use his former employer’s name as a reference.

Three Hints To Getting The Correct Set Of Tools
June 2, 2011 Posted by admin
It’s common knowledge that plenty of guys love nothing more than a garage filled with tools. Big tools, small tools. All hanging on a pegboard in the right place, or all carefully arranged inside of an impressive tool kit. And most people realize the danger of lending tools out, as sometimes they never return. When you have the right tools, you can do pretty much anything around the house. You can easily handle any repair that comes up.
However, if you are just starting out, and don’t have too many tools, it can be intimidating when you head on down to the do it yourself home center. So many tools, so much money. Which ones should you choose? You could easily spend thousands of dollars stocking up your garage. In this article I’ll share with you a few tips on proper tool selection, so you can slowly build your inventory without going bankrupt.
One thing you should probably do before you go shopping is to take an inventory of your house. Take a good hour or two, and give it a good once over. Make a mental note of all the repairs you think may be coming up, and separate them into the near future, and the not so near future. Then simply think of the tools you’ll need first, and focus on those. You don’t really need to buy a cement mixer if you plan on re-paving your driveway in a couple of years. Something like that can wait.
One more thing you can consider is how often you’ll be using a tool. If you are doing some kind of specific job that requires a specific tool, like a cement mixer, for example, you may be better off renting it rather than buying it. On the other hand, if you think you’ll be using the tool quite often, then it’s obviously a better idea to purchase it. By renting tools, you won’t end up with a garage full of tools you hardly ever use.
The last piece of advice is to take a longer look at your house, from a time perspective. Consider how much home repair you’ll be doing over the long term, in addition to the current jobs your considering. If you plan on spending a few years in your home, and really making a habit of home improvement, then consider getting a large tool set. These come in many sizes with many different numbers of tools. This can save you quite a bit of money in the long term.
Now that you’ve got a good idea of the kinds of tools and how many you need, you’re ready to do some shopping. Be sure to shop around, and check with your neighbors to see which brands are the most recommended. Simply find the guy on your block with the most tools in his garage, and ask his advice. Pretty soon you’ll be the expert giving advice.
Make Concrete Blocks–make Money With Your Home Business
May 19, 2011 Posted by admin
Concrete blocks are very heavily used in the building trades. A wide variety of projects is built using cement blocks.
Home projects such as outdoor fireplaces and barbeques are very often constructed using blocks. Home foundations and garages are another use. Very large buildings are also built using cement blocks.
They have been in use for all kinds of construction for decades and continue to grow in popularity and sales. They are low cost, easy to build with and very versatile.
Anyone who is looking for a good home based business which can provide a really nice part time income will find the ideal opportunity in making concrete blocks. The part time business can in time be grown into a very lucrative full time business.
Starting your business can be done with very little investment. Hand molds can be used at first and one person can make to up to 100 blocks per day this way. Molds are made from plywood and sheet metal and can be very inexpensive.
Molds are filled with concrete mix,of the right kind, then the blocks are turned out to dry and cure. The concrete mix for the blocks can be mixed by hand on the ground or it can be done with a cement mixer.
One person can make 100 cement blocks quite easily for a full days production with hand molds. After the business has grown to the extent that more blocks are required for larger orders a concrete block making machine is the best way to go. With this type of machine hundreds of blocks can be turned out per day.
It will also be necessary now to acquire a helper to take the blocks from the machine and place them on drying racks. Enough storage space will be needed to dry all the blocks before they are delivered. This could well mean renting business premises but by now the business will be profitable enough to pay for the extra overhead costs and still turn out a very good profit.
Concrete block making machines are available from a number of companies. They are definitely quite costly but can pay for themselves by increasing production. Another way is to obtain plans to build a cement block machine yourself at much lower cost than the commercial models .
This home built machine is made using automobile parts and sheet metal and is a fairly easy construction project. Should you not be a welder,a welding shop can do the welding for you at quite moderate cost. This home built concrete block machine is absolutely as good as the much more expensive commercial machines and will turn out several hundred blocks per day.
When you are a concrete block manufacturer it is a great idea to produce other concrete products. There is plenty of demand for items such as sundials, bird baths, garden ornaments, patio blocks and a variety of other concrete products.
There are readily available plans for making these products without the use of costly commercial molds. These items are a profitable addition to any concrete business. The profit margin on them is always a lot higher than on cement blocks so they are well worth making.
The manufacture of concrete blocks and other concrete items is a great business which can be started at very low cost and can be built into a very successful full time enterprise. Anyone can work at a day job and start the concrete business as a part time enterprise. When it has grown to the extent that full time work is required to fill the demand you then will become a full time highly successful entrepreneur.

How To: Cement Work In Sub Freezing Weather
April 3, 2011 Posted by admin
Winter weather conditions pose special challenges and conditions when attempting to perform outdoor cement work. Frequently sub-freezing temperatures can make it seem like attempting to do a cement job is not the best idea. However frequently there are conditions that demand that the cement work proceeds according to a set schedule, or a there is condition that has to be attended to without any delay.
Some of the conditions and challenges that must be met may include:
Freezing of the water used in the concrete mix.
Laying fresh concrete on a frozen sub-base.
Fresh concrete which will adjoin an area with a temperature less than 32 degrees.
Protecting against wind chill factors even when the ambient temperature is above freezing.
Unless attended to properly all of the above conditions will prevent cement work from being performed and setting properly. Fresh concrete adjoining, on top of, or exposed to a sub-freezing environment will not allow the concrete to dry properly. Even taking into account the chemical reaction of concrete setting, which causes heat to be formed, will not allow for a professional cement job. In fact the typical result will be an almost granular powder that will not even resemble properly set concrete. At the least the fresh concrete that adjoins a sub-freezing surface will have ruined edges and have to be redone.
Some of the keys to obtaining a professional and proper cement job in the Winter include:
Always mix cement using hot water.
Whenever possible store the needed sand, stone, and cement in a heated environment prior to being brought to the job site.
Using an anti-hydro ad mix which helps prevent the water used from freezing and allows for less water having to be used. Be careful to always follow exact manufacturers directions.
Use concrete curing blankets to cover the finished concrete to help retain the heat from the chemical reaction of the cement setting and make a weather barrier from the above ground weather conditions including wind chill factors.
When possible use expansion joint material to shield the fresh concrete from surrounding sub-freezing surfaces.
Place a sub base of crushed stone to act as a barrier between frozen ground conditions.
When conditions allow and warrant it, using specialty heating blankets to heat the surrounding area and the sub-base is a great way to ensure a high quality cement job. As with all specialized items manufacturers instructions should be closely followed.
Following the above helpful tips will be integral in obtaining a professional grade finished cement job. When the job is finished there is one last tip. Never wash out a cement mixer or cement tools into a sewer drain or house trap. Cement hardens under any circumstances, even under water. Make sure your cement job doesn’t result in the need for house sewer work.

The Concept Of Concrete Landscaping
March 20, 2011 Posted by admin
When using concrete as the main integral part of a landscaping design it is usually referred to concrete landscaping. Concrete is the most common manmade object in the world. Regarding landscaping, it is widely used for patios, paths and other, both as the main item or combined with other materials, such as stone and wood. Concrete should not be confused with cement, in fact, cement is the main ingredient for concrete, as well as sand and gravel.
How to build a patio with concrete
One great concrete landscaping idea is to build a concrete patio into your landscaping design; it is actually not that hard, and as long as you learn about it and understand the basics, you should not have that hard of a time completing it. As well, concrete patios are extremely durable and can dramatically enhance your garden or other landscaping designs.
Concrete patios are not that difficult to design and build as it may seem at first, and the good thing is, that they can last for several years. You can use concrete to create the patio of your dreams, since concrete is a very flexible material when it comes to design. You’ll need to get the main concepts about building with concrete and to do enough planning and designing.
Once you have your initial plan designed on paper, go buy your materials – remember to ask the salesperson how much of each ingredient you’ll need and what are the proportions. You’ll need to get an automatic cement mixer, which you can rent. The first thing you have to do is to mark the desired shape and excavate it. You must go deep enough to make concrete wide and hard. Don’t forget to keep the top of the shape leveled with the ground.
Once you’ve done this, you will need to give support to your future patio. All concrete shapes need some sort of support, in this case, you should fill the bottom with gravel and then install a metal grid to ensure concrete will not break or streak with time. Make sure both the gravel bed and the supporting grid are well positioned before starting to pour concrete into it. The next step is to mix the cement, the sand, the gravel and any other recommended aggregate into the concrete mixer. Start pouring the concrete from the farthest corner from the mixer.
Once you’ve done pouring the concrete you’ll need to finish it off by leveling the surface. You can use a screed at first, and then use a float if there are any lumps. Now all you need is to use your imagination to add design to your concrete patio. When finished, cover your concrete with a plastic film. This is very important since concrete needs a lot of time and moisture to dry and cure properly.
Patios are just one of the simplest ideas you can do yourself with concrete landscaping. Imagination is the limit.

When Renting Makes Sense
March 10, 2011 Posted by admin
Everyone at some time in his or her life finds it advantageous to rent. There are many varied circumstances that may require you to need to rent. You can rent a car, rent a home, rent a flat, rent a castle, rent a coder, rent a security guard, and rent a flat. There are literally an endless number of things, people, and services you can rent. Choosing to rent instead of buy is usually a lot more economical and just makes good, common sense.
Perhaps you want to know why you should rent when you can buy. Well, a good example is a cement mixer. There are many times in your life that a cement mixer would come in handy. The most common utilization may be when you want to create, extend, or redo your patio. This usually takes one day of mixing, pouring, and setting of cement. If you wanted to buy that cement mixer, you would be spending roughly ,000+ new. Not sure you have that much cash to spend on a new cement mixer? Well, if you rent a cement mixer you can rent one for under per day. As you can see in this example, renting that cement mixer makes a lot more sense than buying a new one.
One of the most common of rentals is that of a flat rental. You can get these in your local area when you need a to find a home base or you may be in need of a rental because you plan on vacationing. A vacation rental is not really that much different than your everyday rental, except that you will only be keeping it for a short time. Finding a flat rental is not as difficult as it may first seem. Often, the best flats can be found via recommendations from friends and colleagues. They may have the latest news on the recently available flats in their area. Another popular place that flat rentals are advertised is in the local newspaper. These often have a lot of listed flats for rent or lease. Of course, you can always do a search on the Internet. Whatever you decide on, finding a flat rental is not nearly as difficult as it first appears. A little bit of hard work and research will go a long way.
Of course, you can rent services as well. If you have ever had to hire an employee, you have rented a service. If you have ever hired someone to do your lawn or windows, you have rented a service. Security guards are another popular rented service. Usually, you get a service for a predetermined set number of hours and you then reimburse the service provider for the agreed amount of time. This is a great way to get that needed help for that home project or employment opportunity.
As is obvious, there are reasons you would need to rent rather than purchase. Some things, you honestly cannot purchase due to the high capital costs involved. Unless you have trained in a certain subject, you may not be able to gain the knowledge that a potential rented or hired employee may have. There are some skills that may be beyond you and renting just makes sense. I hire a plumber whenever I need extensive plumbing, because I know the plumber will be trained, professional and get the job done right. Remember that renting is often the only reasonably viable and sensible option that you should choose.

How to Mix Cement
March 6, 2011 Posted by admin
How to Mix Cement
There are many DIY projects around the house that require using cement; however the language of cement is sometimes confusing. There is the difference between cement, concrete, and mortar and it is important to know the difference so we use the correct application for the job we want to do. Cement is a general term for a bonding agent for sand, aggregate, and water to create mortar or concrete. Around the home we use cement for a variety of DIY projects such as making footings for deck posts, sidewalks, and build brick or stone structures.
The most common term we use in cement language is Portland cement. It is pure cement that is purchased in 80 pound bags. When mixed with the proper amount of sand and aggregate for the project it is called concrete. If we leave out the aggregate and put in some lime we have mortar. Mortar is used when we want to really stick things together such as brick or stone.
The basic mixture ratio for concrete is 1 part of Portland cement to 1 part of sand, 1 part of aggregate (small stone), and 24 parts of water. Pre-mixed cement comes in two basic forms, concrete and mortar. It consists of the correct mixture of Portland cement, sand and or aggregate for the desired job. All that is required is to mix water. Pre-mix concrete and mortar is not the same, they have different purposes so make sure that you make the correct choice if you purchase a pre-mix. Mortar has lime mixed with the Portland cement and sand to give it the adhesive quality to stick things together.
When working with cement keep in mind that it dries rather quickly. The work areas should be prepared before mixing the cement mixture. To avoid quick dry out keep the mixture wet by adding a little water and mix it frequently. Mix in small quantities’ to avoid excessive dry out. For small jobs a wheel barrel is adequate. For large jobs such as walkways, small footings, or post holes you may require a cement mixer. For the real large jobs such as driveways or foundations I recommend that you call the big cement truck for a delivery.
Wet cement is very heavy so be aware of your limitations and safety. Don’t overextend yourself when lifting, mixing, or pouring. Wear heavy-duty work gloves and boots. Cement contains somewhat hazardous ingredients, such as lime and drying chemicals, so work in a ventilated area and avoid touching the dry mix or the wet cement for any extended period of time. The chemicals can irritate or even burn your skin.
Keep these suggestions in mind and good luck with your next cement project.

Pouring a Foundation
February 24, 2011 Posted by admin
Pouring a new foundation for an addition
When you are building an addition onto your existing home you will most likely need to pour a new foundation for the new addition. You can also build your addition on Piers, this is OK for three season rooms or sunrooms but not recommended for year round living additions, such as bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens. Before your contractor begins excavation he should have the area surveyed for any underground utilities. Underground gas lines, power lines, sewer lines, water supply lines, septic tanks, oil tanks are just a few of the possible obstacles your contractor may need to go around. If any of these are in the way they will need to be moved prior to excavation.
A typical foundation will consist of three primary parts, (1) the footing (2) the wall (3) the floor. A typical foundation is almost always poured in the three steps.
First the foundation area will need to be excavated to the desired depth. The depth will depend on the type of foundation. A full basement will require a hole to be excavated at a depth of about 8-10 feet. A crawl space will require a hole to be excavated at a depth of 3-4 feet. The footing should always be at least 42” below grade (surface of the grass) in the northeast. Your contractor should know all of your local codes. If you are adding a full basement don’t forget that your contractor will cut an opening from the existing basement to the new basement. That can get messy so make sure that all of your valuables in the existing basement are covered to be protected from excessive dust and make sure that your valuables are far away from the area where the cutting will be done. A concrete wall cutting machine is very dusty and messy.
(1) The footings have been poured and the area under the slab and around the footings is filled with crushed stone to help with drainage so that water does not penetrate through the foundation and enter the basement. Plastic drainage piping has been installed around the outside of the footings and covered with geofabric. A groove is carved in the top of the foundation so that the newly poured concrete for the walls will be fastened to the footing. This groove prevents the wall from sliding off of the footing when lateral pressure is applied.
(2) The walls have now been poured. Once the walls are poured the forms are stripped and the outside of the foundation walls get backfilled. Notice the perimeter fencing around the foundation. It is very important that your contractor always has perimeter fencing up around the foundation, especially overnight when the contractor is not there. This is extremely important; your homeowners insurance could be liable for any injury in the case that someone falls in. A thick plastic sheeting has been placed over the crushed rock to help in preventing moisture from getting through the concrete slab and into your basement. Once the plastic is placed we are ready to pour the floor.
(3) Once the concrete floor has been poured we are ready to begin framing. The concrete floor of your basement should be smooth and level. A good foundation contractor can do this relatively easily.
The Details
A concrete cutting machine sometimes called a wall saw or a wet saw is usually powered using a hydraulic motor. The main hydraulic pump is usually mounted to a truck and the saw is connected using hydraulic hoses. Water is used to lubricate the blade and to control the dust. Make sure you protect the inside of the basement with a plastic sheet.
A concrete pump is needed when a cement mixer cannot access the construction site. Many times additions are built in the back of a house and there is not enough space for a large cement mixer to get around the sides of the house. Sometimes a cement mixer has enough space to get to the cosnstruction area but there is a hill that is too steep, or sometimes the cement mixer would have to drive over a septic tank to reach the construction area. If you have a septic tank make sure it is marked on you property so that no heavy equipment can drive over it. A cement mixer vegicle that is full of concrete can wieght 80,000 pounds.
Pinning the new wall to the existing involves drilling the existing foundation and driving in rebar. The rebar will act as a mechanical fastener between the new wall and the existing wall. This is a must. If your contractor doesn’t do this there is a good chance that the concrete wall will break and cave in when he is back filling. These pins keep the new wall from pushing in when there is a lot of wieght from vehicle driving around the perimeter of the foundation.
Waterproofing the outside of a foundation wall is very important. This can be done either by rolling the water proofing on or spraying it on. The water proofing should cover the walls, where the walls meet the footings, and especially where the walls meet existing foundation. The seam where the walls meet the existing foundation is the most crucial area to water proof. A good contractor will cover this area multiple times. That seam is the most vulnerable point where groud water can enter the basement. Waterproofing material is usually tar based or rubber based.
Drainage is the most important method to eliminating water intrusion in your new basment. A good drainage system should take any water away from the foundation. Water that’s runs off of the roof should be controlled using gutters and down spouts. The downspouts should have extensions on the groound so the rain water is not dumped directly at the base of the foundation. You can also have your contractor lay draiange piping around the foundation. Solid drainage piping can be used to collect the rainwater and discharge it far away from the house. Perforated drainage piping can be installed around the perimeter of the foundation to collect ground water and carry it away from the foundation.
Pre-Cast basement entrances are installed after the walls have been poured. The precast basement entrance can be ordered from a local concrete supply company. Usually your contractor will take care of ordering the unit. The supply company that delivers the basement entrance will also install it. It is usually craned into place where the concrete contractor has left an opening for it. It is bolted to the new foundation and waterproffed. Then the actua metal door will be installed. Most companies use Bilco doors. Don’t forget to paint them at the end of the project, the factory color is usually just a primer paint.

How To Bake Salmon
Ingredients
4 salmon filets, with or without bones, about 140grams/0.3lb each, in total about
600grams/1.3lbs.
2 table spoons of olive oil
Salt and whitepepper
Seasoning of salmon baked in oven:
4table spoons pesto/4table spoons tapenade/4table spoons ajvar (east european sauce consisting of aubergine, onion and paprika – here is a recipe http://www.ehow.com/how_2112073_ajvar-red-pepper-spread.html) about 1teaspoon chipotle pasta or sambal oelek.
Potential filling of salmon baked in oven:
4table spoons chopped crumbled feta cheese or 4table spoons hacked anchovy or 4table spoons natural or flavored cottage cheese.
Accompaniments to salmon baked in oven:
Roasted “rotfrukter” – “rotfrukter” being a Swedish term meaning things like, and similar to, beetroot, potato, carrot. Accompanying the salmon etc you could for example have 12 small potatoes split in two.
2 peeled diced carrots
2 peeled sliced red onions
¼ celeriac, peeled, cut in small pieces
2 parsnips, peeled, diced
4table spoons olive oil
Salt and whitepepper
Sauce for salmon baked in oven:
4dl greek yoghurt
1-2 crumbled feta cheese or
4table spoons pesto or
4table spoons ajvar
Below is explained how to bake salmon.
Start by turning on the oven at 200 degrees Celsius.
Prepare accompaniments like ovenroasted “rotfrukter” and put it in for 35 minutes before putting in the salmon (which should be in there for 10-15 minutes; meaning the “rotfrukter” will be done as well when the salmon is)
Split the salmon in four rations if they aren’t split already.
Turn around the filets in the oliveoil – salt and pepper.
Possibly fill the filets by making a cut horizontally in the middle of each filet, and put in some filling – like crumbled feta cheese, cottage cheese or anchovy.
Put the salmon with the skin down and fry it maybe for a few minutes.
Fill the salmon with seasoning like pesto, tapenade or chili if you wish.
Put the salmon filets in the oven and bake them for 10-15 minutes. The salmon meat should have become brighter and have become stiff in the middle. The salmon should be around 58 degrees Celsius in inner temperature.
If you want, make a sauce by mixing turkish yoghurt with the seasoning
Take out of oven the “rotfrukter” (potatoes, carrots, beetroots etc; which ones of similar ones you like), salmon and serve with the sauce.

Top Factors To Make Use Of A Cement Mixer For House Projects
January 27, 2011 Posted by admin
A cement mixer is an integral component of any building undertaking. But not all construction tasks are made equal. Some contractor companies start small, accepting much more compact scale building work. For these companies, industrial mixers on truck deliveries could be as well cumbersome, impractical and excessively pricey. So they would need an gear that’s more perfect for his or her projects. A transportable cement mixer is the answer to this need.
Portable cement mixers enable the employees to bring the mixer anyplace and all over the place they require and desire to. Generally, the transportability of the concrete mixer is due to its small dimension and easily movable base. The original Kushlan wheelbarrow mixer is a great instance. Rather than trucks, the miniaturized cement mixer consists of a wheelbarrow for its bottom. This provides towards the flexibility in using this mixer because it can be placed at the nearest feasible region precisely where present cementing operate is at palm. This indicates mixed cement would just be at arms’ reach of the employees, preventing pointless and, most significantly, wasteful hardening of the cement within the mixer drum.
Talking with the drum, the producers of this portable cement mixer created sure which the drum is as durable because it possible could be.
Cement is one of many main sectors that plays a pivotal function in the development and growth of a nation. The cement industry is certainly one of many main beneficiaries of the infrastructure boom in the country. The Indian cement business is large, and it has great production capacity.
The cement industry is a very big industry. Inside the US, the dominant cement companies are in Texas, California, Florida, Pennsylvania, Alabama and Michigan. The total manufacturing from just these five states constitutes currently a lot more or less 50% of the whole cement that’s created within the US. Outside the US, you’ll find also numerous those in industrial countries. Highly industrialized nations need cement businesses to create nearby uncooked materials for infrastructures, buildings and houses. The top five businesses produce a lot more or less 51% cement. 80% with the companies within the US are overseas owned.
